Misuse of the Name of God:
Participation in Blasphemy

Last Update: 16 July, 2022

What is this Issue Concerning?

This is about the use of the name of a diety, or anybody's diety, as a an expletive (swear word).

In particular, the use of the name of 'Jesus' or 'Jesus Christ' has been used in our entertainment recently, even if we don't use His name that way ourselves.

How prevalent is this?

The name of Jesus has become the dominant swear word in modern mainstream video entertainment, even surpassing all other expletives.

Required Background Understanding

  1. Jesus Christ is the Creator and God:

  2. [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2]] The same was in the beginning with God.
[3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
[4] In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

(Holy Bible, KJV, John 1:1-4; underlining is ours. Note that 'Word' or 'Logos' is Jesus' eternal title)

  3. Jesus Christ is the judge of the World.

    • For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: (Holy Bible, KJV, John 5:22)

    • For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. (Holy Bible, KJV, 2 Corinthians 5:10)

  4. Jesus Christ is a real person. Many people have met him, even without dying, including yours truly.

  5. The Bible includes a Commandment to not take the Name of the Lord in Vain:

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Holy Bible, KJV, Exodus 20:7)

Why this is Wrong:

It's not appropriate the name of anyone's diety as a swear word, nevermind the name of the central diety of the Christian religion, even in regions where it is the dominant religion. No other diety or any other person's name, no matter how evil, is used as a swear word the way the name of Jesus has been used as a swear word.

Christians also have it as a Commandment not to take the name of God in vain.

Jews have the same commandment, and won't even speak the name of their diety because His name is so sacred.

Even if we don't choose to use this word as our own expletive, allowing it repeatedly in our entertainment causes the following problems:

  1. It wraps us into participation in and responsiblity for the blasphemy if partake in enteratinment which blasphemes God and we don't do anything to object to it.

  2. The passive consent for blasphemy, like with many other evil projects, ropes large groups of people into the guilt who would never be guilty for this on their own.

  3. The repeated hearing of the name as an expletive primes the subconscious mind to use it when we react with a quick expletive since these words are not usually chosen by logical thought of what word to use, but in the heat of the moment.

No one's name should be used as a swear word, not even the worst devil, and especially not the name of anyone's god, especially not the Creator.

Any word can be used as an expletive; there is only harm and no benefit in using the name of Jesus, or anyone's diety, as an expletive.

What the Threat Is:

To use the name of God as a swear word is definitely an offense to Him.

Definitely taking any part in it, even passively continuing to watch with no objection, is going to hurt your relationship with Him.

What He decides to do about it is His choice, and His power is unlimited. At the very least, offending Him is going to weaken His protection over our lives and our world. If He chooses to destroy us, that would be His right. It's a dangerous thing to mock your Creator.

Why this is done:

It seems to be an attempt by those who hate God to induce large audiences to consent to His blasphemy, thereby hurting Him and inducing guilt into His people.

What the Best Solution Is and Why:

Imagine what followers of other religions would do if the name of their diety was used as a swear word even once in published entertainment.

What You Can Do About It:

  • Start using reviews such as on PluggedIn which warn about misuse of God's/Jesus' name.

  • Start taking note of when it happens and complain to the producers of this entertainment that this is totally unnecessary and dangerously culpable blasphemy. Ask them to stop.

What good does it do? It not only defends your God, and reduces the guilt of your society, but at the very least it will make you innocent of the blasphemy you just watched because you objected: you didn't give (implied) consent by remaining silent. This will all surely help you at your Final Judgment in the next life, especially since Jesus Christ is that Judge. However if enough people complain they should realize that it's not even worth the public backlash to mock Jesus in their productions.
